The harmonica, commonly referred to as a French harp or mouth organ, is a versatile free reed wind instrument that finds application across a spectrum of musical genres, including blues, American folk music, classical, jazz, country, and rock. Various harmonica types exist, such as diatonic, chromatic, tremolo, octave, orchestral, and bass models. The instrument is played by directing air through one or more holes along a mouthpiece, where each hole houses a chamber containing at least one reed. The most prevalent model is the diatonic Richter-tuned harmonica, often known as the blues harp, which typically features ten air passages and twenty reeds.

The harmonica reed itself is a flat, elongated spring made from materials like brass, stainless steel, or bronze. It is secured at one end over a slot that functions as an airway. When the free end vibrates due to the player's airflow, it alternately blocks and unblocks this airway to generate sound. Each reed is meticulously tuned to specific pitches through adjustments in length, weight near its free end, or stiffness near its fixed end. Typically, longer or heavier reeds will yield lower sounds, whereas shorter and lighter reeds produce higher pitches.

Modern harmonicas often position reeds above or below their slots rather than in alignment with them. This design allows for enhanced responsiveness to airflow directed toward the reed's closure point. Consequently, players can simultaneously use both blow and draw reeds within the same air chamber without the need for plastic or leather valves.

An advanced technique employed in harmonica performance is bending, where adjustments in embouchure create pitch changes. Bending allows for subtle pitch manipulation of isolated reeds and can be applied to diatonic models to raise or lower pitch by engaging an otherwise silent reed within the same chamber.
